Nobody Knows Anything

I’ve noticed a strange phenomenon and perhaps you’ve noticed it to?  I call it the “Nobody Knows Anything” phenomenon.  Pick an important topic and chances are there are a group of people on either side of the fence with opposing arguments.  The web seems to magnify the phenomenon since everybody is allowed to chime in with an opinion or agenda. The conundrum of health in the media This phenomenon is particularly evident in the health industry and perhaps it’s because health is somewhat intangible.  Vaccines, homeopathy, pharmaceutical drugs, even raw cacao are examples of this.  Perhaps it’s also because we seem to...

Natural Wellness vs. Orthodox Medicine, a Fever Blister Story

I recently spent three wonderful days backpacking at a high altitude, but neglected to use any sun/wind protection on my lips.  One day later, 80% of my lower lip was chaffed, cracked, split, and a large fever blister had formed.  Hardly what you’d consider a crisis, but considering it was four days before my wedding and I was required to “kiss the bride” (and be featured in photos that would be displayed forever), it constituted a minor medical emergency.  The word “stupid” comes to mind, but I thought it was worth sharing the story in the hopes that it might...

The “green” cleaning products on the market are great, but they can be pricey. Finally, we found an easy way to make all the healthy “green” home cleaning products you need, all in one handy kit. Organic Moses Basket

During the Natural Products Expo West, I was talking with a manufacturer of organic baby clothing/blankets, and we discussed the importance of chemical-free natural fibers for newborn babies.  Together we started to prioritize which products were most critical for parents to focus on, and concluded that any clothing worn for long periods (i.e. diapers) should take precedence.  But because babies love to put toys in their mouths, we decided chemical-free toys (e.g. wooden rattles, stuffed animals etc.) are likely to be even more important.  Then we determined that since babies spend so much of their time sleeping, a chemical-free sleeping...

Beyond Organic, Supporting Local Farmers & Craftspeople

"Organic" and "organic certification" are relatively new terms that promise us healthier foods and products.  It’s common sense that foods and products that adhere to the National Organic Standard are better for us and the environment than the "conventional" equivalents, but it’s also important to think outside the organic box and realize that organic standards are simply how we used to live. Organic is nothing new Not too long ago organic was simply the way things were.  Locally grown fresh food, raw dairy, fresh nutritious foods made from scratch, natural fibers, and natural materials were normal.  Now these things are special, come...

Safe & Effective Deodorant - Baking Soda

After trialing a variety of natural deodorants and not being particularly impressed with any of them I stumbled across some information on baking soda and decided to give it a go. I simply rubbed 1/2 a teaspoon of food grade baking soda under each arm, put it to the test, and was very impressed with the results. It can chaff a little so be gentle, and is a little messy to apply, but otherwise I’m hooked until I find something better. Simply type in “baking soda deodorant” into Google and you’ll find numerous recipes on the theme that are safe,...

Kick Mosquitoes Down a Notch This Summer

For those of us who hate the thought of slathering on dangerous chemicals like DEET just to enjoy a summer picnic without mosquito bites, there is good news! Bug Bam has created these fantastic wristbands that resemble “cause” bracelets and are amazingly effective in repelling mosquitoes. All-natural (made with plant oils), DEET-free, and 100% recyclable, these wristbands are waterproof, sweat-proof, and last up to 100 hours. You can even put them on the chair legs as you sit down to enjoy your outdoor barbeque feast. They have a citron-y fragrance, but you don’t smell like you’ve been dipped in citronella wax. For...
